Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with Rochelle Moulton on her excellent Soloist Women podcast. Our conversation delved into the evolving role of generative AI in strategic communication. As we navigate this new digital era, I’ve observed how AI can both challenge and complement the irreplicable human aspects of how we communicate.

On this episode, we talk about:

  • A pragmatic approach to embracing AI’s potential. I emphasized AI’s growing role in expanding our creative horizons while highlighting the need for vigilance around its limitations, such as accuracy and ethical considerations.
  • The human elements of communication. Despite AI’s capabilities, I argued that human experience and how we use storytelling to relate to one another remains — and will remain — uniquely human. And it’s this human touch that allows us to create content that resonates deeply with audiences.
  • Enhancing creativity with strategic use of generative AI. I discussed using AI as a tool to enhance creative thinking, break through creative blocks and elevate our storytelling.
  • Growing our empathy with deep listening. Listening is not just a passive act; it’s an activity that we do. And deep listening fosters understanding and empathy, skills that are essential for relational leadership and effective communication. (And as Rochelle points out, listening is critical for selling our products and services, too!)
  • The role of storytelling in an AI-centric world. Storytelling is a fundamental part of how we connect human to human in communication, no matter if we’re leading, marketing, selling, or educating. The proliferation of AI has only underscored its importance.

My hope is that this conversation inspires you to view generative AI not as a replacement but as a “signal booster” for our human communication abilities, so we can grow and improve our storytelling and our creativity.
